Thank you for being a pioneer and making sandwich bags that are compostable. I know all the peanut butter and mayo residue doesn't make plastics recyclable...but it sure makes it yummy for composting bugs! Everybody: get behind this product. Start asking your town officials when you can compost more than leaves.

I think that all detergents and household cleaners should be concentrated. Why would a company want to pay extra shipping and packaging costs? I know that I would have more room in my cabinets. I have spray bottles and really prefer to use my own. Kudos to S.C. Johnson for deciding to use-less, packaging, fresh water and ultimately less fuel. Way to decrease your carbon foot print!

This is the 2nd time I have ordered. I love this idea. The Shout carpet cleaner is the best. I have always used Windex and Scrubbing Bubbles, and am trying the Fantastic Kitchen cleaner this time too. Thanks for making Green Choices!

I was so pleased when you came up with the Windex Concentrate foil pouches and am curios why you switched to the plastic bottles. I think the pouches were a greener alternative. I am glad to see more concentrated offers for your other products. Just ordered a bunch! Thanks SCJ!

Hi OCMOMof3 thanks so much for your note and your enthusiasm about concentrates. We're excited about them too! Some people gave us feedback that the pouches were harder to pour cleanly. And, the pouches themselves weren't recyclable. The new mini bottles are easy to pour and they're made from the same recyclable plastic as a milk jug. So, we hope you'll like them! Let us know what you think after you try them out.

A ton of these products can be made at home for pennies on the dollar to what you pay for the "green" brand name alternatives. You're just paying for pretty packaging and water. Many of the store cleaners that you use can be made with vinegar and essential oils, but still used on multiple surfaces eliminating the need for additional cleaners. It doesn't have the synthetic dyes & perfumes that are irritants added in to what you find on shelves. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE.

We hope you don't mind if we respectfully disagree. Homemade products can work well or not so well, depending on the mix. There are also safety issues related to what chemicals can be mixed with others. Also, homemade products don't undergo scientific safety testing, and can bring unexpected allergy impacts, e.g. from essential oils. Our concentrated cleaners offer a tested, effective choice - and they come in small, recyclable packages. So we hope you'll give them a chance.

We're Listening

You care about the environment, and so do we.

That’s why we’ve launched this Green Choices Marketplace and why we’re working to make concentrates an easy-to-use, easy-to-find option for families.

Someday, we hope there’s so much demand for concentrates that they’ll be sold on store shelves right next to pre-mixed starter products.

In the meantime, we’re learning as we go. And we want to hear from you! We welcome your comments, questions, critiques and tips.

This site is moderated by Kelly Semrau, Senior Vice President of Global Corporate Affairs, Communication and Sustainability for SC Johnson. Join the dialogue on Twitter, too, at @SCJGreenChoices.

Frequently Asked Questions

When did SC Johnson start offering concentrates?

In July 2011, we launched Windex® Mini concentrated refill pouch. The response was tremendous. In the first 30 days of online sales, Windex® Mini orders came in faster than any other Windex® product sold online. Plus, we heard from more than a thousand consumers who shared comments and recommendations about the product and about concentrates in general. We’ve applied our learnings to newer products.

How many bottles do I get from one concentrated refill?

With the Mini refills, when mixed with water, each concentrate refills a single 22 or 26 fl. oz. trigger bottle with cleaner. Likewise, each Smart Twist™ concentrate cartridge is equal to a standard trigger bottle of cleaner.

How do I know how much water to add?

With the Mini refills, you add the water yourself and the amount depends on the product:

  • fantastik® Mini concentrated kitchen cleaner – mix with 3 cups of water in a 26 fl. oz. trigger bottle
  • Pledge® Mini concentrated furniture cleaner – mix with 3 cups of water in a 26 fl. oz. trigger
  • Scrubbing Bubbles® Mini concentrated bathroom cleaner – mix with 2 and 1/3 cups of water in a 22 fl. oz. trigger bottle
  • Shout® Carpet Mini concentrated carpet stain remover – mix with 3 cups of water in a 26 fl. oz. trigger bottle
  • Windex® Mini concentrated glass & surface cleaner – mix with 3 cups of water in a 26 fl. oz. trigger bottle

With the Smart Twist™ sprayer, you simply fill the water tank with tap water.

How do I clean my existing bottle so I can refill it with a Mini refill?

It’s easy! Just follow these steps:
  1. Rinse out with tap water. Be sure to tilt the bottle so the water rinses all interior surfaces.
  2. After rinsing a few times, fill the bottle ¼ full with water.
  3. Insert the trigger.
  4. Spray into the sink to rinse the inside of the trigger — 6 to 8 sprays should do the trick.
  5. Remove the trigger and empty the bottle.
  6. You’re set — start refilling!

Are Mini bottles and Smart Twist™ cartridges recyclable?

Yes. They're made of HDPE #2 plastic – the same plastic as a milk jug. They can be recycled in most community recycling programs.

Who can I call if I have questions about the products?

We’d love to hear from you! You can call our Consumer Product Helpline at 800-558-5252. Or, click here to contact them via email.

How can you say it’s “green” when I had to have it shipped to my house?

We wish you could buy it at your nearest grocery store! But to get retailers to start stocking concentrates, we need a groundswell of demand. That’s one of our goals with these products — to drive the dialogue about concentrates and hopefully start a revolution. Since online sales and shipments are a necessary part of it, we're planning to offset each shipment as part of the purchase. It's not as good as avoiding the shipping miles altogether, but it's a start while we work toward making concentrates more readily available.

Are these the same products I get in the pre-mixed bottle?

They’re close, but due to being concentrated, the formulas are slightly different. These formulas are designed to provide the great results you expect from our products despite the variability of different tap waters and dilution levels.

What can I do to help create the concentrate revolution?

Join your friends in trying green choices. Concerned people like you are making better choices for a green world.
